Our story begins with a woman who grew up on the farm but initially took a path away from agriculture. After pursuing a career outside farming, Lucy found herself consistently drawn back to the land that had defined her early life. In her 30s, she returned to her family’s farm in Bordertown on the Limestone Coast, driven by a desire to live and work in an environment that felt like home. But she also knew she needed a way to sustain this new chapter. With the farm already focused on cattle, she decided to try something different—poultry farming. Chickens seemed manageable, requiring less initial investment than other ventures, allowing her to start with a modest setup and grow over time.

Building a Business from Scratch

In July 2019, she left her full-time job and committed to turning Lowan Park Produce into a reality, joining the Adelaide Hills Farmers market a few months later in November. Like any entrepreneurial journey, it took time to build momentum. She experimented with a few trial runs, learning along the way about the nuances of poultry farming, particularly raising meat birds. Starting small and expanding cautiously allowed her to mitigate risks while gradually increasing her income, setting her business on a solid foundation.

A Holistic Farming Approach

The core of Lowan Park’s philosophy is regenerative agriculture—working in harmony with nature to improve the land’s health. Lucy uses a pasture-raised model, where chickens are moved to fresh pasture every day. This method not only benefits the birds but also enriches the soil, creating lush grass for the cattle that graze after them. This interconnected, sustainable system reflects her commitment to leaving the land healthier and more vibrant than she found it.

A Platform for Women in Agriculture

As a female-led business, Lowan Park also carries a message about opportunity and inclusivity in farming. She advocates for more people, especially women, to explore agriculture. Her work has shown that farming isn’t confined to one type of person or traditional background; it’s a field open to anyone with the passion and drive to make it work.

The Heart of the Community: The Farmers’ Market

The Adelaide Hills Farmers Market has played a significant role in Lowan Park’s growth and outreach. The market offers more than just sales; it builds community and creates connections between producers and the community. Lucy loves interacting with her customers and sharing the story behind the food they eat. Many customers have supported her from the start and continue to buy from her week after week. Over time, this connection has fostered a customer base that values understanding where their food comes from and the sustainable practices behind it.

The market has also been pivotal in spreading awareness of her brand, with her stall being a place where people gather, ask questions, and learn about the care and passion that goes into every product. Although Lowan Park has a wholesale business, the farmers market remains the heart of her customer base and a hub for direct engagement.

A Place in the Future

Reflecting on the journey, she expresses gratitude for the support of the market and her loyal customers over the past five years. The community has been a source of motivation, helping to shape her business and create meaningful friendships. Seeing people make conscious, informed choices about their food is a daily reminder of the positive impact Lowan Park can have.

In the years ahead, Lowan Park Produce Poultry Farm will continue to nurture both the land and its community. What began as a leap of faith has evolved into a thriving business, a platform for women in agriculture, and a model of regenerative farming that inspires others to consider a more sustainable path.

This month, we’re thrilled to introduce Kimchi Club, a beloved member of the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market community.

Why did you become a market stall holder?
Korean food and culture are quite new to Australians so I think it’s really important to share our stories as well as our food. Having a stall gives me opportunities to meet people and make an authentic connection with them so they can learn about Korean food and culture and we can learn about how people experience our brand and products.

Name of your business?
Kimchi Club

How long have you been trading at AHFM?
Since 2019.

What do you appreciate about farmer’s markets?
For me, farmers market is the best place for not only food but sharing values and respectful relationship with customers. Our customers appreciate what Kimchi Club brings. I also appreciate the other stall holders, they are such hard workers, and generous people. They do with long built-up knowledge and experience they’re happy to share. As a healthy food producer, many of my customers have their own healthy recipes in their own styles. I feel special when my customers share with me the different ways they use our food.

What does the farmer’s market offer your business?
Selling our healthy food is great at the farmers market but I also really enjoy shopping for premium and healthy foods for my family and also ingredients for Kimchi Club.

How do you prepare your products for market?
When we create our product recipes, we consider every single ingredient for their health benefits. Our Kimchi products are not only rich in probiotics but also high in prebiotics. Prebiotics are food for probiotics so they both very important for our body and mind. Also, for us, it’s important to have a small footprint. Our premium ingredients are locally sourced
and organic. It’s great for the local economy.

What message would you like to give to the Adelaide Hills community about our market?
I always appreciate that our regular customers keep checking in at our stall and saying hi. It really makes my day feel special. So thank you for your ongoing support.

This month, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on one of our cherished regular stallholders at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market – Lilit’s Hamov Kitchen! 🎉

Stay tuned as we delve into their incredible journey, the passion they bring to the market, and the locally made foods that grace their stall every week. Discover the heartwarming story of Lilit’s Hamov Kitchen and their delicious contributions to our community🛒

Name of your business?
Lilit’s Hamov Kitchen

How long have you been trading at AHFM?
Ten years.

What do you appreciate about farmer’s markets?
We like low food miles, buying something the day it is picked from the ground or the tree, knowing that the meat comes from animals that lived relaxed, stress-free lives in verdant paddocks within SA before they were processed, and that the processing was done cleanly and the packaging with artificial additives. We like the originality of our stallholders and the knowledge that what we buy (and what LHK sells) is unique to us, as well as healthy and free of chemicals and pesticides.

What does the farmer’s market offer your business?
The market offers LHK a ‘home’ base and continuity of customer contact and service. We feel an intrinsic part of the community, after ten years of serving delicious Armenian-Middle-eastern-style foods to the patrons of AHFM and its out-of-town visitors.

How do you prepare your products for market?
Lilit’s Hamov Kitchen has featured for almost ten years at the Adelaide Hills Farmers market. Much of it can be characterised as soul food, Armenian and Middle Eastern cultural wholefood. Lilit cooks sweets, savouries and takeaway meals from frsh, organic, local, low food mile ingredients every week. Savoury dishes are prepared to eat then and there or to be taken home and warmed in the pan or oven. LHK products are all from her Grandma Anoush’s original hand-written recipes, or adapted from what she learnt as a youngster with various local trends in street and soul food. LHK instant meals are usual based around one protein, beef, lamb, pork or chicken with the equivalent of two serves of vegetables each. As we age our needs are higher. Protein is high in iron sources, such as Zinc, selenium, and phosphorus, and builds lean muscle and helps to regulate blood sugars. LHK meals contain lean proteins and each serve typical weighs 350-380g.

What message would you like to give to the Adelaide Hills community about our market?
We would like to stop being the best-kept secret of the Adelaide Hills and become more widely known – rightly so – for the quality of the produce on offer and the friendliness of our customer service. Why give your earnings to faceless rich eastern seaboard supermarket shareholders? Keep your money in the community. Eat local, seasonal, and fresh. That is global thinking.

Introducing Salt Gang – the culinary dream we’ve been obsessed with for over a year now! Inspired by the culinary traditions of China and Japan, Salt Gang makes small batch condiments, ferments, and foraged foods with beautiful Adelaide Hills produce. Read on to hear their unique story and immerse yourself in the passion and heart that goes into each of their products.

Name of your business?
Salt Gang

How long have you been trading at AHFM?
Over one year!

What do you appreciate about farmer’s markets?
We love farmer’s markets for the connection to our food and to our producers. To be able to directly talk to a farmer or artisan about their work is a delight.

There’s a sense of pride and thankfulness that thrives in markets, a sense of community and continuity. At the farmer’s market there is dynamism and seasonality, money within local hands– at the supermarket there’s cold storage offerings on the shelves doing little to stir the imagination, and at the till they’ll ask you to donate to their foundation to offset their tax. Market produce is fresher, tastier, and produced with more care, and offers more to the human spirit.

What does the farmer’s market offer your business?
We find the the market is our best opportunity to chat to our customers. It is extremely gratifying to know how people are using and loving our products, sharing them with friends and family, new ideas for using them. It’s our connection point with them, a way to build community and also a source of deep satisfaction. We love food and talking to people about their cooking, and the farmer’s market is an amazing way of getting our product out there.

How do you prepare your products for market?
Most of our days involve making a batch of something for Salt Gang, or shopping for ingredients, and every day involves the tending of ferments. We shop at the Central Markets for our bulk spices and some special ingredients like young ginger, and for our veggies we shop seasonally from Hills and Riverland growers, farmgate stalls, market gardeners, and also forage some wild ingredients.

We make everything at home in Balhannah, and really enjoy spending our time together cooking and talking up new ideas.

What message would you like to give to the Adelaide Hills community about our market?
You can do the vast majority of your weekly food shop at the market and eat deliciously!

We are so lucky to have magnificent veg, the best pastured chicken in a generous variety of cuts, beautiful bread, tasty fresh meals for an easy dinner…if you do a big shop at the market you’ll be set up with seasonal, nutrient dense, satisfying food.

Discover the stories behind the producers at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market and delve into the world of local food with our series, ‘Know the Producer on Your Plate.’

This month, we proudly present Bald Hills Olive Grove, a business that has been an integral part of AHFM since its inception in 2009. Let’s uncover their journey and the passion they bring to your plate.

Name of your business:
Bald Hills Olive Grove

How long have you been trading at AHFM?
From its beginning in 2009 (I think). We harvested enough fruit for 1000+ litres of oil and panicked! What can we do with it all? It was more than enough for family and friends.

What do you appreciate about farmer’s markets?
Opportunity to share our produce directly with our customers. Their interest in quality healthy food. The flexibility in attending. Links with other producers. The opportunity to learn, create and build business processes.

What does the farmer’s market offer your business?
Immediate connection with customers. The opportunity to trial new/ different products. Exposure to those seeking local and quality goods, who may then buy for their café/ restaurant.

How do you prepare your products for market?
We grow olives and link with other growers. The olives are processed off site. We package e.g. bottle the oil and olives, create marinades and condiments using local and SA products where ever possible. They are then labelled ready for market. The pulses enable us to support green protein – rejuvenating the KI farm soils as well as our guts.

We also reuse flagons to help reduce waste, although it is time consuming to de-label, clean and sterilise them. It is great to share similar values with the customers in the market ethos. We employ locally and use SA businesses for our supplies.

What message would you like to give to the Adelaide Hills community about our market?
It’s friendly, informative and provides food that is good for you, your family and the community – building self reliance.

Welcome to another edition of our series, Know the Producer on Your Plate, where we dive deep into the stories and philosophies of the amazing vendors at the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market.

In this installment, we had the privilege of chatting with DJ’s Citrus, who have been growing citrus for over 6 decades!

Here’s what they had to say about it.

Name of your business:
DJS Garden Fresh Citrus

How long have you been trading at AHFM?
Our DJS Garden Fresh Citrus stall has been a part of AHFM since day 1 on Saturday 12th December 2009. It is over 12 years ago that we set up along with 43 other stallholders in the carpark of the Mount Barker TAFE for our very first farmer’s market.

What do you appreciate about farmer’s markets?
As we are passionate about producing high quality, very flavoursome and juicy citrus fruit on our 60-year old orchard; we find that its at farmer’s markets where the caring customers are looking for and appreciate the quality of our freshly picked fruit.

Also, the friendly atmosphere of farmer’s markets makes for a delightful, enjoyable environment for marketing our citrus produce.

What does the farmer’s market offer your business?
As the farm of DJS Garden Fresh Citrus is quite small, the farmer’s market provides an economical outlet for the marketing of our citrus.

In 1962, our citrus property was planted at Greenways, Nildottie in the Murraylands of South Australia by Joy’s parents as a small local interest venture alongside their wheat/sheep farm. We found that the yield from our orchard (about 1000 trees) was too small to get a sufficient return from the regional bulk fruit packing sheds and be able to cover costs of maintaining the orchard and living expenses.

Therefore in 2009, we began packaging some of our fruit here on the farm and selling it direct to the customers of the farmer’s market. The market has given us the opportunity to trade as part of a community, which has allowed our stall to build a loyal customer base that provides a regular income.

How do you prepare your products for market?
The continual maintenance and irrigation of the orchard is all attended to by dedicated members of our family. Each year the property is fertilised with organic composted poultry manure and multiple applications of tree nutrients directly to the leaf foliage or through the drip irrigation system.

Many hours each week are spent picking, hand sorting and bagging the fruit right here on the farm to be able to supply the produce as fresh as possible to the market. As we bag our own fruit we are able to reuse our packaging recovered at the market or returned by customers.

Our hand-made fresh juice, citrus inspired baking, jams, marmalades and sauces are all prepared with special attention to food hygiene practices with particular consideration for our gluten free products. We encourage customers to be environmentally aware and we have authority from the Mid-Murray Council for the return of all glass jars and glass bottles purchased at our stall for sterilisation and reuse.

What message would you like to give to the Adelaide Hills community about our market?
The AHFM offers a wonderful, friendly food shopping experience to everyone living in the Adelaide Hills. Our committed stallholders offer a great selection of best in class fresh produce, while providing the added bonus of allowing the customer to meet the grower/producer and chat about their food choices.
